Today’s the day: The Emotion Thesaurus (Second Edition) enters the world!
Over the years, many of you have written to us about the impact our book has had on your writing. Whenever we hear that your editor is commenting on your improved ability to get emotion on the page or that your readers are saying your newest novel is un-put-down-able, Becca and I cheer! We love helping writers, and your success is our success.
This is why we knew we needed to create a second edition: to do right by each of you and make it even better.
The new edition has…
- 55 new emotions, such as Euphoria, Vindicated, and Schadenfreude.
- More descriptive options within each entry
- A list of power verbs for each emotion
- 55 more writing tips (a big hit in the first volume!)
- Double the teaching content, including sections on showing emotion in dialogue, using subtext to reveal hidden emotion, and recommended character research to write authentic emotional reactions
- And more. The book is almost double in size, after all!
We hope by tackling a larger range of feelings you will have the tools you need to go deeper, sharing more emotional moments with readers.
If you would like unbiased feedback as to whether you should upgrade your edition, we recommend this 1st vs. 2nd edition book comparison by Jami Gold.
GIVEAWAY ALERT!
This contest is now closed…keep an eye on your inbox for a winner’s notification!
Every new book is a chance to celebrate you, our loyal readers. This time, instead of many small prizes, we’re giving away one BIG one: we will pay for a writing conference, retreat, 1-year professional membership, course or workshop (online or in-person) for one winner (up to a value of $500 US).
So, if you would love to attend a writer’s conference but can’t swing the finances, want to take that incredible writing craft workshop but can’t justify the cost, would love to belong to a professional organization, or you’d even like to try a writing retreat but, you know, have zero money to do so…this is the prize for you!
Note: this is not a cash prize. We will work with the event organizers directly to pay this fee on the winner’s behalf. Also, because this is a writer-chosen prize, certain conditions must be met.
Enter below, and good luck! This giveaway closes February 26th, 12 am EST. Legal rules and conditions apply. Open internationally. (Yes, internationally!)

This is terrific! I love the books in this series and use them almost every day.
That’s wonderful! I am so very glad they are helping you, Kymber! Hope the writing is going great! 🙂
I would like to have this book when words don’t come into my middle-aged mind quickly.
Yes–we all need a brainstorming nudge once in a while! I hope you find the book really helpful.
My copy of the new Emotion Thesaurus will be delivered tomorrow – yay! I have all your books, and they are so helpful to understand and write about my protaganist’s emotion of the moment. I particularly like the Emotional Wounds Thesaurus. They all are within reach of my desk while I write. I’ve also explored the new character builder tool – you guys blow me away! Fantastic tool – thank you!
Oh wow, that’s so wonderful! I’m so glad you test drove the Character Builder. We’re super proud of that one. Not that we aren’t proud of all our books, just that it’s something different…lol, you know what I mean. I hope you love the book when it arrives!
Your book(s) and 2nd edition sound so exciting….and helpful! I don’t know how I ever missed it. Thanks to Darlene, I’m here and I’m signing up for the giveaway and checking out your book. Sounds like it will be most useful as I’m in the middle of writing my next novel AND will give me so great ideas for my creative writing students. Congrats!
Hi Pam! So glad you came on over from Darlene’s blog! I hope if you bring any into your class they help your students. We love being part of the curriculum. 🙂
I had this on pre-order and can’t wait to read it. I love your thesauri (thesauruses?), they’re so helpful.
I’m glad to hear the books are helping you, Judith! Writing is not at all easy, but if we can do something small to make it go a bit smoother, we’re happy to do so! 🙂
I’m waiting for tax money but will get my copy asap! Congrats, Angela and Becca!
Ah, Taxes. I hear you on that one. I hope you’re in for a nice reimbursement this year!
Big congratulations, ladies! Wow, the first one was so helpful. This one must be just bursting with awesome stuff.
You are terrific for saying so, and I hope that is the case. We would love to exceed all expectations. Fingers crossed people are happy with this book! Thanks so much for stopping in and the kind words. 🙂
I have the original one and use it all the time. I am sure the new one will be even better. Ordered it today.
We hope you love it, Barbara–thanks so much for giving it a try!
I’ve got my copy 🙂
I hope you find it SUPER HELPFUL! Thank you so much, Jemima!
Okay, now what’s great about this is I have learned, with a little help from my friends and some common sense HOW to do all of these things–even how to post something onto INstagram by myself! Coming in to the 21st century as I turn 67 this weekend! so, thanks for that, too!!
Happy early birthday, Melanie! I hope you have a terrific one. We’re never too old to learn, and there is always more wonderful knowledge out there to absorb. Life is pretty grand. 🙂
Oh, that means mine ships today, too! Fresh pages with no dog-ears, pen marks, post-it notes! You guys are the best: and I turned our writing group on to this book a few years back. Wow, what a difference it’s made in my writing life to have your books–and your newsletter–in it!!
I’m so glad it has helped you, Melanie. Thank YOU for taking charge of your writing and doing whatever it takes to grow and improve. It makes all the difference 🙂
Thank you so very much for sharing the original with your writing group. This type of word-of-mouth is the gold standard of our industry, and becca and I really appreciate it. The more people we can help, the better! The world needs more great books 🙂
I can’t wait to get this one!
I hope you love it, Helen!
So pleased I could blog about it on the day of its release! Even though I’m lucky enough to have an ARC, I can’t wait to get my own paperback copy but have to be patient, in-between jobs at the moment and ££ a bit tight. And thank you, ladies, for the amazing, generous giveaway!
You are lovely, Joy! Thank you so much for all your help. Becca and I appreciate it more than words can express! <3
Absolutely love your books! I also just bought the Rural Place Setting Thesaurus which I know is bound to come in handy based on the setting for my next novel 🙂
We love the setting volumes, and I hope you find this one really helpful, Mae! Thanks for the kind words and for testing it out. The setting actually can do so much for the story, it’s amazing! (And,haha, that’s why we needed to put out 2 books on the topic…truthfully, we could have even done a third, I think!)
I have every book of yours in my library. I’m waiting for the 2nd edition of The Emotional Thesaurus. I am both an editor and an author–these books have been invaluable. A++. I highly recommend!
I’m so glad you find them useful, Robbi. Thanks for both using them and recommending them!
Mine’s on it’s way – once I get my hands on it, I will lose a day or so going through it and then have 8 chapters to revise
My copy shipped this morning!
Hurray! I hope you love it. I still don’t have my own copy, so I will have to live vicariously through yours when it arrives 🙂
